Earthquakes has been well received in the 20 years since it was first published as Earthquakes: A Primer. It has been used as a textbook in both high schools and colleges and enjoys a wide general readership as well. Reviews by professionals and teachers have generally been favorable, and from their suggestions I have clarified the text and in a number of sections have replaced some explanations and illustrations with topical case histories and up-to-date-discussion.
It is particulary pleasing that Earthquakes has been distributed internationally through the publication of adaptations in several languages: Russian, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Greek, and Japanese.
I would like to thank the editors and translators of these foreign-language editions for their attention to the spirit of the English text and for helpful special appendixes that have been added; some of the changes have been incorporated in this new edition of Earthquakes.
